Find em Dano!

Technology- gotta love it!

Platescan is a name you are going to hear a lot about shortly. So pay attention. For you techies, Platescan is an OCR for license plates.

Here in California, CHP has installed the Platescan system in several cars in California. What this system does is scan several hundred license plates per hour, right from the two-camera system which is installed in the CHP squadcars. The system then matches the plates to a database of known stolen cars.

If a stolen car is found, a special tone rings out. Says Alex Breitler, reporter for the Record Staff. Excellent article.

Since the State of California requires we pay $1 per registration to combat stolen cars, I vote we spend some of that cash to buy a few more of these units. At $17,000 each, it's a good deal.

Road to Calfornia Review - iQuilt

While my favorite quilt (A Dog's Day - left) didn't win any prizes, I did enjoy seeing all the quilts and vendors at last weekends Road to California Quilt Show.

For those of you who haven't attended a quilt show and exspect to see a lot of little old ladies running around-- be forewarned: Today's quilt show isn't your Grandmother's Quilt Show.

Today's quilt shows are a combination of traditional quilting and modern fiber art. Many of the pieces shown at this show fetch thousands of dollars as "art" when and IF they are ever put up for sale. They are well worth a visit if you want to see something new and exciting.

True confession time: I've been involved in the sewing and quilting world for years. I've sewed all my life. While in college, I took a class in Color and Design, with the Dr. Florence Kava and did an internship/job at Meredith Corporation's; Better Homes and Gardens, Arts and Crafts Group. I ended up designing needlework and sewing designs for several years, and when the "spirit moves me" I go back and do something new if I feel there is a market for it. Note: I'm about to make another move.

This year's Road to California Show was a good one. The quilts shown were a good strong representation of the high quality work being done by today's fiber artists and quilters around the world.

My favorite quilt traditional quilt atthe show is called Butterfly's Delight, was made by Mildred Sorrells from back home in Illinois. (Congrad's Mildred!) This hand appliqué is Mildred's speciality and I was personally pleased to see a quilter from home win the Outstanding Traditional Quilt category. Mildred's won before at Road'. Her bright use of color and overall balance, as well as stellar quilting, mades a complete visual statement. Butterfly's Delight would be perfect either on a wall or as the centerpiece in a bedroom.

More pictures will be posted on Tuesday over on my quilting weblog, iquilt blog.

Capkey Revisited

Thanks to Ozmasgirl and a couple other bloggers who came to my rescue in the last couple days, and suggested I check out Spare Parts Warehouse and eBay to find either a new or used keyboard for the notebook. I found what I needed! It's on its way...

Request for Help - Keycap broken

Drat! Last night I was typing away, and all of a sudden my Q key came loose from the board on my old Omnibook 4100. It had happened before, but normally it just meant the key had become unhooked from the board. So I set it aside until this morning when I could see it in the light of day, and gather the tools to put the little sucker back on the board.

So this morning, after having my coffee I started checking out the key-- everything was intact. So I proceeded to carefully attach the pins back to the board, when all of a sudden the connectors broke.

Anyone have a clue where I can get a replacement? Buying a new notebook at the moment isn't in the budget. Email me or put it in the comments please!

Road to Calfornia

Thursday morning, the Road to California Quilt Show starts in Ontario, CA at the Ontario Convention Center. I will be there, come hell or high water.

(Cassandra Williams Port Mansfield, TX Quilt, pictured left, Won the Judges' Special Merit! Congradulations! )

Every year I go to a few choice quilt shows, to visit with friends and associates. Since "Road" is so close to home, I always go. This year I need to catch up with several friends. I need to get together with Julie and bring her Christmas present. And then meet with Sandy to pick up my annual stash of Indigo fabrics. (Hint: Should you ever wish to be on my good side for life, send me real indigo fabric.)

I'm going to pick up some interfacing to finally start working on the Geek Quilt of that trunk of computer T-shirts for Doug. I've made them for other people but never him. Most of the ones I've seen aren't nearly as nice as the ones I've made for the cousins and kids.

Pictures and stories to follow. Dr. D's in charge of Mom this weekend.

Status Quo

Sorry about the light blogging folks-- it's been a couple weeks since I've finally been able to pull my head above water and write.

For the friends and family who have written or phoned: Dr. Doug's mother is doing better. She scared us when she developed sepsis and went into septic shock. We think the reason was because she was being treated for a UTI on top of the flu, but the drugs may not have been working . So for no apparent reason, she became completely disoriented, her oxygen levels and blood pressure tanked. Thankfully the nursing home staff paid attention and she was hauled to the nearest hospital ER in Whitter for evaluation and treatment.

She ended up in ER for over 24 hours while her HMO (who will remain nameless for the moment,) got their act together and finally allowed her to be admitted to the ER hospital. She was in Whitter getting EXCELLENT care for about 48 hours when the HMO finally found a bed at their hospital in Baldwin Park and demanded she be transported there. So they moved her again! Talk about giving a senior a reason for disorientation? She was in Baldwin Park for 2 1/2 more days before they moved her again to a new nursing home for further treatment and rehabilitation.

That was about 10 days ago--

At this point we're working with her to get her stronger and healthy. I have been running between home and their at least every other day, checking on her and doing her errands etc as well as our own.

If you think I have a life of my own at the moment? Guess again. I'm barely caught up with the laundry from before the holidays.

However this weekend's mine.

Expect Light Blogging

Expect light blogging friends. Do not expect to see Dr. Doug and I appear at CES. Doug's mom is back in the hospital and it appears we're back to square one. While she's making positive progress, she is still in serious condition. So we're in the waiting mode, and taking turns being with her.

Less than three weeks ago she was racing me down the aisle at Albertson's and having a great evening. Now we're at this point. Keep us in your thoughts.

Cookin-Con: Viva da Pot Roast

Jeneane and I have tossed around our Chicken Soup Recipes in the past couple days. You might ask, why in the hell would two women who have much better things to do with their time, than attempt to upstage Martha post our recipes online? Simple stupid: WE CAN. And from my standpoint may be someone will read my weblog and find the courage to make something they once thought nearly impossible for them to make at home. If you do-- I want to hear from you!

It's been mentioned that it might be a good idea that Jeneane and I do a Cookin-Con at some remote Alaskan Lodge at a place and date to be named later. I propose something a little more sane... Next year we hold an auction to say 30-50 lucky souls to come to our private little cook-off, at a private hotel with kitchens, and allow the guests to vote on who's Pot Roast, Chicken Soup or whatever was the best. Income from this event will allow Ms. J and myself to attend the event, pay for the meal and even have a few bucks left over for the charity of our choice.

Whatta ya think?

Here's the Pot Roast Recipe I promised, I call it:

Viva da Crock Pot Roast

Dig out the the Crock Pot. Wash it up and prepare the following: I have a smaller 4 qt. crock pot, so I can't use meat larger then 2 1/2 lbs, if I had this Crock Pot a new 6.5 qt pot I could do much larger meals.

Comments: First off, I admit that over the years I've grown lazy when it comes to cooking. Having grown up around and in the restaurant business all my life, I'm not up for spending countless hours preparing a gourmet meal. But I did learn by trial and error that you can create a great wholesome fresh meal with a little preparation. This took some doing because Dr. Doug is not a crock pot fan, but one day I prepared this along with a green salad, a glass of red wine and some apple cobbler. The pot roast was an instant hit. My Crock Pot got to come out of the closet.

2-2 1/2 lb piece of beef, I prefer a thick piece of boneless Chuck Roast

2 12 oz can of beef broth

Garlic powder or a 2 cloves of garlic (Not garlic salt)

Black coarse ground pepper

Optional: Favorite Steak Seasoning

2-3 stocks of celery chopped

1 medium 3-4 inch white onion

1 medium turnip

4-5 carrots scraped and cut into quarters

4-5 medium potatoes peeled, or 8-10 2-2 1/2 inch whole red potatoes (not peeled)

1. Prepare the meat and allow to come to near room temperature, by allowing it to sit out covered for 45 minutes. Blot the meat dry of all excess moisture. Wet meat doesn't brown. Cold meat stiffens when browned will become tough. Season with Black Pepper and garlic powder. Do not add salt. There is enough salt in the beef broth to season.

2. Rough cut onion, and mince garlic, if you are using fresh garlic. Do not cut Onion too fine as it will fall apart completely while cooking. Set aside.

3. Sear the beef in an oiled skillet and brown. DO NOT cook the meat more than it takes to brown. Remove and place immediately in the Crock pot set at high.

4. Add Onions, garlic and one can of beef broth. Put on the lid and keep it on until the pot begins to boil. Normally this takes about 30-45 minutes.

5. When it starts to boil, set timer and allow to cook for 30 minutes. Then turn temperature to low and keep the lid on.

6. Allow to cook about 60-90 minutes then carefully lift the hot lid and turn the meat over. Replace the lid quickly and continue cooking another 1-2 hours. Check the meat to make sure it's done. Done means the meat is nearly soft to the touch of the fork.

7. While the meat was cooking, you should clean and prepare the remaining vegetables. Set these aside on the counter so they are near room temperature when you add them to the pot. Cold vegetable take longer to cook in the crock pot as it dramatically changes the temperature.

8. When the meat is done, remove and platter. Cover with foil and allow to stand. I wrap my meat platter with a towel to insulate and keep hot, because I do not have a warming oven.

7. Turn the crock pot back to high. Add vegetables, and additional broth if needed. Allow to cook until the potatoes and the turnips are done. Which should me about 30-45 minutes. If the meat is too cool, set it back in the pot for 10-15 minutes to reheat. Remove everything and platter and cover until serving time.

8. If you like thick gravy. (Which I don't.) Remove the veggies and thicken with arrowroot or corn starch and the remaining can of broth. If you like thin gravy, serve it up as is.

Serve the roast and veggies up with a good salad. I'm not opposed the the great bag salads today, they're quicker and cheaper than you can make for a couple or small family. Have a great glass of red wine and enjoy.

P.S. This left over Pot Roast makes excellent sandwiches.

Can I Nuke Adelphia?

Pardon me while I bitch a bit...

Over a month ago Dr. Doug and I became more and more upset at the quality of our cable tv service from Adelphia. The upper channels were not always clear and WGN resembled a snowstorm. Cable modem service has and does go out regularly without notice for hours on end. Only after you call tech support do they tell you, they are performing upgrades or other such rubbish.

Several weeks ago we had the cable repair guy come out and "attempt" to fix the television service. "Attempt" being the key word here. The young guy saw that we had no WGN, and did see the poor picture quality of several of the stations. So he went to work without saying much.

First the cable guy starts clipping off the ends of several of Dr. Doug's "Gold Ends" video cables that connected the televison and VCR and DVD recorders and reattaching new ends without even asking permission. "These are never any good." he tells Doug when Dr. Doug finally sees what Cable Guy is doing. Now all the quick connect cables we purchased in order to be able to rearrange the equiptment, add cameras etc without having to move the large and heavy tv etc. Grrrrr...

Then he goes to his truck to add add little boxes which area supposed to pump up the signal power to the tv's. He installs all of this, in about 45 minutes and sees the signal is still not good. Oops! Sorry! I'll have to get someone out to fix it at the line. He tells Dr. Doug and me. Asks for a signature and promises to have someone from the office call us to schedule the additional repair. We tell Cable Guy, that if they don't get this corrected, we exspect a credit for the lack of service. He tells us they will work with us.

We call three times in the past few weeks and over the holidays, and couldn't get a soul who could resolve our problem, or would work with us. We've gotten NADA NOTHING, NOT EVEN A DAMN WHISPER OF WHEN WE WILL GET THINGS FIXED. We have left several messages at the local office to get this resolved. STILL NOTHING.

Then to top it off, the Cable Guy tosses the ends of his clippings with my Gold Ends attached into our yard.

Tonight they shut our cable modem off. When I get up, I'm going to the Adelphia office to have a little conversation with the local manager. This is not going to be fun.

Tournament of Roses: We're Getting Ready for a Parade!

It's New Years Eve California Style. For years the Tournament of Roses Association, has had a pact with the 'old man upstairs if they never held the The Rose Parade on Sunday, it would never rain on the parade. And as you might have suspected, for the past 50-51 years it never rain on the parade. There have been years it's been close-- real close. Tonight the local weathermen warned everyone it will rain all night and probably on Monday morning at parade time. So if the idea of camping out with 50,000 of your closest friends on soggy Colorado Blvd. doesn't appeal to you-- let me give you the low-down on the 2006 Tournament of Roses before you tune your television or log in to watch the parade online, let me bring you up to speed...

We have a Theme: "It's Magical"

We have a Grand Marshall: Sandra Day O'Connor, Retired Supreme Court Justice

We have a Rose Queen: Queen Camille Clark and six Rose Princesses Shannon Bowman, Michelle Corral, Rachel Geragos, Alyssa Jones, Carolyn Loo and Eliza Walpers

We have two college football teams to play the Rose Bowl: USC Trojans vs. University of Texas Longhorns. They brought their mascots, cheerleaders, marching bands and a large number of students and alumi to add to the fun and traffic jams.

We have over 48 Floats, 25 Marching Bands, 23 Equestrian Units (Click for parade line-up list.) The floats are being built as we speak and sleep to make the Judging prior to the parade and 8 AM kick off deadline.

We have a 5 1/2 mile parade route

We have hundreds of miles of cable for the major television networks broadcasting the parade live including: ABC, NBC, Univision, Tribune Broadcasting thru' KTLA, KWHY-22, HGTV, Sky Link TV, the Discovery HD Theater Channel and the Travel Channel. As well webcasting live on the internet on MediaZone.com (for a fee.) We have the media people in town.

One of those folks with a coveted Media Pass is me.

I intend to go down and photograph the floats as they are moving them into position and at judging. You'll get to see them before they roll down Colorado Blvd. Hopefully I won't drown!

Note: We drown and never could get a shot off, without wrecking the camera equiptment.
